Last week the nation witnessed one of the most significant victories against racial and social injustice, with Derek Chauvin’s guilty verdict on all three counts over the brutal killing of Mr. George Floyd. Although justice has prevailed in this case, countless other victims of racial and social injustice, known and unknown, remind us that much more work is required, and we should strengthen our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Charles E. Schmidt College of Science stands with all students, faculty, and staff during this unprecedented time in history, when we all feel the unfathomable impact of the pandemic and numerous incidents of racially motivated aggressions and violence. We recognize there is a myriad of reasons leading to the manifestation of racism and hate, but today let us stand together, embrace, and celebrate our similarities and differences as one human race. We come from different places, different backgrounds, different cultures, different identifies, and different beliefs, yet we are all human beings with dignity, emotions, and empathy. When we all stand together to challenge injustice and instill positive changes, justice will prevail.

We hereby state our support for individuals and groups who are disproportionally targeted by racism, particularly Black individuals, groups, and communities. We stand with our Black students, staff, and faculty. You are valued members of our community and we care about your safety and well-being. We stand with all students, staff, and faculty of all backgrounds and identities, and stand with all individuals, groups, and communities who have experienced racism, harassment, xenophobia, and discrimination.
