I would like to welcome the Department of Exercise Science and Health Promotion (ESHP) to the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. The department comes to us from the College of Education and is led by Dr. Michael Whitehurst, who serves as the Chair and Professor. The department offers interdisciplinary graduate and undergraduate degrees that prepare students for careers in a number of areas, such as clinical, corporate, and community health promotion, postgraduate study in health sciences, and even advanced study in areas such as biomedical sciences. ESHP has over 1,000 undergraduate majors, making it the fifth largest undergraduate degree program at the University.
Exercise Science and Health Promotion is the College of Science’s seventh academic department. Joining the college creates opportunities for deeper collaboration on a number of unique and exciting areas of research. Exercise Science faculty and students are involved in a range of research, including exercise immunology, exercise neuroscience, exercise oncology, and exercise and human performance. The department also takes part in pre-clinical models of metabolic disease. You will also find behavioral studies that investigate the personal and social determinants of health and lifestyle choices. Faculty and alumni are internationally recognized for their research.
The ESHP facilities are located on the Boca Raton campus Athletic Field House, along with labs in the FAU Arena building. All ESHP facilities will remain at the current locations. The department’s facilities include the Exercise Biochemistry Lab, Human Performance Lab, and Muscle Physiology Lab.
The department also engages in outreach and service programs. The FAU-Well program offers free adult health and fitness activities for the community, and FAU faculty and staff.
I am thrilled to have this dynamic and growing department join the College of Science. And I hope you will join me in welcoming them to the college.
