The Charles E. Schmidt College of Science Advisory Board is an independent organization providing support and assistance to the College of Science at Florida Atlantic University. The mission of the Board is to advise the College regarding its progress and interactions with individuals, corporations, and agencies external to FAU and to develop, plan, and facilitate specific targeted activities that advance College goals through outreach to them.

Senior Clinical Research Scientist

Phil received his bachelor’s degree in biological science from Florida State University. He later enrolled in the graduate program here at FAU in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Phil was mentored by Dr. Ram Narayanan and focused his research on bioinformatics-based discovery of novel cancer genes. Together, they published 6 peer-reviewed papers and established the first microarray core facility in the state of Florida. In 2003, Phil was the second person to receive his PhD from the Department of Chemistry. He then took a position as a research fellow at Harvard Medical School and worked in the lab of Dr. Leif Ellisen at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center. There he studied the molecular tumorigenesis of head and neck cancers and discovered a novel molecular mechanism for hypoxia signaling. After his postdoctoral training, Phil joined the Oncology R&D group at GlaxoSmithKline where he is currently a Senior Clinical Research Scientist in the Cell and Gene Therapy group. Phil has 20 years of experience in cancer research and has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and reviews in cancer journals. Outside of science, Phil’s passions are his family, faith, sports, the outdoors, and serving in his community

Duffell’s international background and multiple economic development roles have shaped his forward-thinking and problem-solving approach regarding the development of South Florida’s economy using technology as a catalyst. 

Since becoming president & CEO of the Research Park at FAU in 2011 the Research Park’s contribution to the region’s economy has surged, largely due to the repositioning efforts Duffell has implemented.  The Research Park has been re-positioned to become highly visible and engaged in the business and higher education community throughout South Florida, and Duffell has forged links between Research Park companies and the student and faculty body at FAU that have resulted in new research projects, commercialization of intellectual property and employment of FAU graduates by Research Park companies. As a result, the Research Park is recognized as a valuable asset in the region’s economic development efforts.

Scott is a recognized leader in the South Florida real estate community, most recently serving as President of the Board of the Realtors Commercial Alliance of Palm Beach County and Greater Fort Lauderdale, and also serving on state and regional Realtor Association boards.

Continually seeking to enhance his knowledge and skill, Scott has earned degrees in computer programming, economics, and business administration. His career experience includes business consulting, senior management and board positions, entrepreneurial ownership and management, manufacturing and operations, sales and sales management, and international economic development. Scott currently volunteers at the Machine Perception and Cognitive Robotics Laboratory at FAU, focusing on the social, commercial and economic aspects and impacts of artificial intelligence.

A longtime Boca Raton resident, Scott enjoys time with family, running with his dog, learning Tai Chi, reading, fishing, and community involvement.

Lon Gopie is Senior Vice President at Bank United.

Lon received his undergraduate degree in Finance from Florida Atlantic University and his MBA from Nova Southeastern University. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for The Urban League of Palm Beach County, Chairman of the Board for New Urban Community Development and is involved in other organizations such as The Business Development Board, RMA of South Florida and The Angel Forum.

Joel Ivers served as Executive Consultant. Consulting for start-up tech companies and other companies in need of executive support in management, operations, marketing, and fund raising. Consulting for venture funds that focus in the tech sector.He was a Mentor at StartupQuest Fort Lauderdale, FL and mentored a team of professionals to create a business plan and an investor pitch in a business plan competition.

Diane More is an entrepreneur, educator, and philanthropist. As an entrepreneur, Diane co-founded and is the current CEO of More Sports Group, which focuses on the management, marketing, and representation of talented players from various sports, with a focus on football. As an educator, Diane spent her early years, teaching students who suffered from language disabilities. As a philanthropist, Diane has given her heart, time, and money to several causes and organizations. Diane has worked with Florida Atlantic University since 2014 in various capacities, including but not limited to Florida Atlantic University’s Master of Business Administration in Sports Management program which has been nationally ranked and considered among the best in the world. Diane has worked on behalf of the Florida Atlantic University Football Program. She currently works with Coach Norrid on Florida Atlantic University‘s player development program, with the goal of teaching Florida Atlantic University’s offensive lineman life skills to help them navigate life off the field. Diane was responsible for the renovation of FAU's Science Building Lobby. Through the More Family Philanthropic initiative, Diane has supported The Phil and Penny Knight Cancer Center at Oregon Health Science University. Diane was also on the board of Jewish Big Sisters in Chicago.  Diane earned a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Arts in Languages Pathology from Northwestern University. In addition, she was also awarded a Master of Science in Education from Lewis University in Evanston, Illinois.

Stilson is a graduate of Tufts University, and holds an Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF) Designation, a Chartered Financial Consultant Designation (ChFC), and a Chartered Life Underwriter Designation (CLU)

He resides in the Boston area and spends time in California, Florida and Hawaii. While in Florida, he serves on an Advisory Board to the Dean of the College of Arts and Letters and serves on an Advisory Board to the Dean of the College of Science at Florida Atlantic University.  During his spare time, he enjoys playing golf and exploring restaurants with eclectic and diverse menus.
